Current Webcam Status

The webcam is currently active and streaming. Best visibility is typically between 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM NZST, with limited visibility at night depending on moonlight and mountain illumination.

How to Control the Mt Ruapehu Webcam

Take control of the view! Use the dropdown above the player to instantly move the camera to your favourite view — no login or chat commands needed. There is approximately a 30-second delay in the live stream, so allow a moment for the camera to move.

Views you can choose include:

  • Wide mountain panoramas – the full sweep of Mt Ruapehu above Ohakune, including Carrot Park in the foreground
  • Close-up zoom shots – zoom right in on the summit ridge, snowline, and volcanic features
  • Turoa ski area – check the snow on the ski runs and see whether the lifts are turning, including the High Noon and Park Lane chairlifts
  • Turoa Mountain Road (Ohakune Mountain Road) – see conditions on the road up to the ski field before you drive
  • The Big Carrot – Ohakune's famous roadside icon at Carrot Adventure Park
  • Auto tour – sit back and let the camera automatically pan through the best views of the mountain and surrounding area

Tip: For the most immersive experience, use the full screen button in the video player controls and turn up the volume to enjoy the live PeakFM radio stream.

Prefer YouTube? Watch the Stream There Too

Our original 24/7 YouTube live stream is still running as a secondary option. It shows the same camera, so it's handy if you want to cast to a TV, watch in the YouTube app, or keep the stream playing in the background. Note that camera control is only available from the player at the top of this page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often is the webcam updated?

Our Mt Ruapehu webcam stream provides continuous live footage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The stream is updated in real-time, allowing you to see current conditions at any moment.

How do I change the camera view?

Use the dropdown above the live player at the top of this page to switch between preset views — wide mountain panoramas, close-ups of the summit, the Turoa ski area and its chairlifts, the Turoa Mountain Road, and the Big Carrot. The old YouTube chat commands (!ptz) have been retired; camera control now happens right on this page, no login required.

What audio is playing on the stream?

The live audio is the radio stream provided by PeakFM, the Central Plateau's local station. Tune in for local music, news, and updates from the Ohakune community.

Can I see ski conditions in winter?

Yes! During the winter months (June to October), the webcam provides excellent views of snow conditions on Mt Ruapehu. You can see fresh snowfall, groomed ski areas, and general weather conditions at Turoa Ski Field.

Where exactly is the webcam located?

The webcam is mounted on one of our holiday houses in Ohakune, situated at the southern base of Mt Ruapehu. This location provides an unobstructed view of the mountain's southern face, including the Turoa ski area.

Why does the mountain sometimes disappear from view?

Mt Ruapehu creates its own weather systems due to its significant height (2,797 meters). The mountain can become obscured by clouds, fog, or precipitation. These changing conditions are part of the dynamic mountain environment and demonstrate why checking the webcam before heading to the mountain is so valuable.
